Essential Tools for Travel

Although there are many articles and opinions of what tools to travel with, I think that it's worth repeating. Traveling for over two years now, my tool kit hasn't changed much since I hit the road. Essentials are tools that will allow you to do basic maintenance and repairs to your motorcycle. Depending on your level of skills and knowledge should determine the type of tools to carry. I've met some travelers on the road that were carrying an overkill of tools, or tools that they didn't even know how to use. It's easy to have the mentality of "just in case" with all our gear, including the tool kit you carry. An essential tool kit should allow you to do the following. Bolivia Into Bolivia, the welcome matt So here I am in Bolivia. I have been anticipating this country since the time I started dreaming of traveling the world on my motorcycle. I’ve also been apprehensive, because I know that at times it will be difficult. I had heard that gas can be difficult to buy and that the roads in the south can be impossible. I had met up with Jacob in Peru and we planned to ride together in Bolivia. We set out for the border. The border crossing was like most, simple and straightforward. Get stamped out of Peru, turn in your TIP (Temporary Import for the motorcycle) and then get stamped into and receive a new TIP from Bolivia. Bolivia only grants 30 day visas for citizens of the USA, but you can get it extended easily in La Paz or other places where they have a immigration office. The way the wind blows

So, as you might know, the winds in Argentina and Chile are terrible in the summer months. Countless people who ride to Ushuaia write about the winds blowing them off the road or riding on a tilt from the strong winds. Going to Ushuaia was not so bad in November as the winds are not at their strongest, and I had the wind to my back in many cases because I was traveling south and east. But going back north would be a bigger challenge. The wind in you chest would be agonizing, and destroy my fuel economy. Also being on a 250 make is more challenging, not that would trade it. Any bike in these winds is going to be a challenge. And, because I have a smaller silhouette, I actually do better than most of the bigger bikes. Going north to Brazil, I didn’t want to deal with the winds, so I found a ferry that takes you from Punta Natales to Puerto Montt, where the Carretera Austral begins.
